Umit Kurt reviews the main contributions to Armenians and Kurds in the late Ottoman Empire: A Social History, starting with an explanation of how historiography of late nineteenth century relations in the Ottoman Empire has only recently addressed some of the main issues related to the relations between Armenians and Kurds, the socio-economic issues that divided groups in Cilicia and other specific areas, and the dynamics of the Armenian revolutionary parties within the Imperial framework. Also, important to this work are in depth studies of local histories. This work is important for examining how the nineteenth century Ottoman Empire failed to achieve its goals of reform and modernization and what this meant in terms of relationships with minorities.
