Hay Gin: The roots of modern Armenian feminism

Hay Gin was the first feminist journal produced for and by Armenian women. The founder and editor of Hay Gin was Hayganush Mark. Below is an excerpt from the first editorial printed on Nov. 1, 1919.

Hayganush Mark (1885–1966) was an important Armenian feminist, writer, and editor. She was a key figure in the Armenian women's movement in the early 1900s. Born in Constantinople (now Istanbul), she worked hard for women's rights and focused on improving education and social conditions for Armenian women.

Mark is best known for starting and editing the Armenian women's journal "Hay Gin" (Armenian Woman), which was published from 1919 to 1933. Through this magazine, she talked about women's rights, education, and social issues. She wrote about the need for gender equality, women's right to vote, and the importance of education for women.

Her work greatly influenced the Armenian feminist movement and helped the fight for women's rights in the region. Despite facing many challenges, including political instability, Hayganush Mark remained committed to empowering and advancing women.
