Lemkin and the Armenian Genocide in Light of New Research

Khatchig Mouradian explores three main topics regarding Lemkin and the Armenian Genocide in light of new research. He examines how Armenians referred to the events of 1915-1923 before Lemkin defined the term "genocide," how these events led Lemkin to shift his career from linguistics to law, and how Lemkin involved Armenians in the effort to get the Genocide Convention ratified by the United Nations. Mouradian complements Frieze’s analysis of Lemkin’s autobiography, highlighting how Lemkin's experience at the United Nations fueled his determination to have "genocide" accepted in international law. Mouradian also discusses how Lemkin's resolve to see the convention ratified did not alleviate his disappointment with the final version adopted by the United Nations.
